Most chimes are decoration that makes noise. Ours are instruments that carry names.

Why we exist

Three build decisions separate an instrument from a clatter, and none of them shows up in a product photo.

**Length is the note.** Each tube is cut to a real pitch and the chord is named on the quote — a pentatonic run, a major key, a gentle minor for memorial pieces — instead of being sold as ‘soothing tones’.

**The node is the hang point.** A ringing tube has a still point about a fifth of the way from its end; drilled there, the cord and the ring ignore each other. Drilled at the top edge — where most cheap chimes are drilled, because it is easier — the cord damps every note it touches.

**The striker is centred.** One striker must serve every tube equally. Centring it, weighting it, and hanging it at the tubes’ sweet spot is the third quiet discipline, and you can hear it in one breeze.

What we actually make

Tuned aluminum chimes with named chords, node-drilled tubes and centred strikers. Memorial and remembrance chimes with exact, gently-handled engraving proofs. Corporate chimes whose logos live on porches for years. Honest bamboo — the warm percussive knock, never oversold as a chord, and the one place tube engraving is welcome. Gift-boxed occasion pieces for weddings, housewarmings and retirements. And retail programmes for garden centres, built on a chord ladder and held on file.

Every quote states the chord, the tube count and lengths, the finish, and exactly where the engraving goes.

What we do not make

Doorbells and door chimes — that is electronics. Decorative indoor mobiles — that is sculpture. Gongs, bells and singing bowls — each its own craft with its own specialist. Everything we make hangs outside and is played by weather.

And we will not engrave a tuned aluminum tube, however nicely we are asked. Engraving removes metal, removing metal shifts the note, and a detuned memorial chime is a broken promise. The sail carries the words; the tubes carry the chord; both do their jobs.

The tests you can run yourself

Find a dead-sounding chime and look where the cord passes through each tube. At the very top edge: drilled at the antinode, strangled from day one.

Listen to one gust. A chord you could hum afterwards means tuned tubes; a clatter you couldn’t means approximate ones.

Watch the striker in a breeze. If it swings wide and reaches only two tubes, it was never centred and weighted — the other four tubes are decoration.

How we price

No dollar figures on this site. Price moves with tube count and length, finish, engraving and quantity — and the tuning disciplines cost us minutes while changing everything, which is why they are standard rather than upsells. Send the details and a real quote comes back the same day, with a lowest-price guarantee if you are already holding a cheaper one. Ask that supplier where their hang holes are drilled.

On engraving

The sail is the page: names, dates, addresses, logos and lines of verse, cut deep enough to weather decades outdoors. The clapper takes a second, smaller line — a poem fragment, a monogram — that is found rather than shown. Logos are redrawn for the medium when they need it, because engraving is subtractive and hairline detail closes up; we show the proof at real size before anything is cut.

Memorial proofs get the slowest, most careful handling we know how to give: spelling and dates confirmed in the proof, checked again by a person, and never rushed past a family.

Sail dies, chords, finishes and artwork are held on file, so a second chime, a next season or a second shop matches the first.
