Why Wind Chimes Clack Instead of Ring

Everyone has stood next to a chime that sounds like dropped cutlery and assumed chimes are just like that. They are not. Here is the mechanism.

What a ringing tube is doing

Struck, a tube flexes in a standing wave: the ends and middle swing while two points — the nodes, roughly a fifth in from each end — stay still.

Sustain is that wave surviving. Anything that grips the tube where it moves steals the ring.

The top-edge shortcut

Cheap chimes drill the hang hole at the very top of the tube because it is fast and the tube hangs prettily. But the top edge is an antinode — maximum movement — so the cord clamps the wave on every swing.

The result is the signature clack: a note that dies the moment it is born. No wind, weather or WD-40 fixes it, because it was built in.

The node-drilled difference

Drilled at the node, the tube hangs from its own still point. The cord and the vibration simply do not meet, and the note rings on for seconds.

What to do with the clacker you own

Diagnose it for the satisfaction: look at the cord holes, listen for the dead stop after each strike. Then retire it to a windless corner with honour.
